Process

Various components were tested prior to selecting the PIR sensor including a hall effect sensor as well as a reed switch.  The PIR sensor was selected due to personal interest in this technology and easier conceal-ability of the device near the door.

I tried hacking other existing code for similar devices but all the code I was able to locate was more bloated than I needed. I ended up created the code myself which require much less debugging.

Hardware

Particle Photon microprocessor

Breadboard

PIR sensor

LED

Piezo

1k ohm Resistor

Wiring for breadboard

Software

build.particle.io was used create the code and flash the Photon microprocessor.

Reflection

The key takeaway from this project was that Particle devices can experience uncommon and difficult technical issues when trying to connect to a secondary wifi network as well as a Windows serial monitoring.  I was able to work around these restrictions but will be resolving them soon.

Future work on this project will include a portable power supply and optimized timing in digital reads as well as SMS output.

Additionally I would like to enable two way SMS so that I can send commands to turn on, off, and report motion activity measured.

If I were to make this over-the-top crazy, I would create a preset library of .wav files, add a speaker to the circuit and have associated SMS words that I would send to the device to piece together my own sentence to speak to the intruder.
