Our project is dedicated to the space around dreams and our ability to process our emotions, moods and stress in our sleep. We want to explore using objects in the bedroom as transactive memory and emotional deposits. Our goal is to enable users to be reflective of and to clear their heads of their emotions and ideas before they sleep, so that they do not lay in bed brooding.

Vision

Our project aims to use objects within bedroom context as transactive memories and emotional deposits to de-stress users before they go to sleep and prepare them for the next day. We believe it is pretty common in today's fast paced world for individuals to feel stressed and overwhelmed. Today sound sleeping is an issue and helping individuals to reflect their emotions before going to bed and feeling relieved is helpful for their mental state. Additionally, we aim to motivate them for the incoming day and lead them towards positive mental change.

Design Process

As a group we decided to ideate around dreams and our ability to process our emotions, moods and stress in our sleep. We then decided to explore these ideas using objects in the bedroom as transactive memory and emotional deposits to enable users to clear their heads before they sleep.

Below are the photos from our ideation process with a brief description following it.

We discussed several themes: sharing & exploration of dreams, goal accomplishment, stress & anxiety, status of things, to-do list & reminders, etc. We decided to rate our themes and pick favorite ones, then we re-discussed and narrowed down our ideas. We concluded in moving forward with transactive memory and emotional deposits within bedroom.

We divided into 3 groups to develop 3 different prototypes. First prototype interacts with mobile objects to input emotion and play correlating sounds to encourage reflection. Second prototype consists of moving things into a jar to represent things on users' mind and setting them aside as users sleep. Third one combines inputs from first and second prototypes to reflect and motivate users after sleep. All three connected devices are around pre & post sleeping moods of the user.

Reflection on Success

From this project, we learned that making connected products in a short timeline is very difficult. We feel that we worked well in a team, and although our products do not work perfectly, we accomplished a lot in a two weeks.

See our individual gallery pages for more reflections.
