Make a quick hack for your home using the Particle platform
A hands-on introductory course exploring the Internet of Things and connected product experiences.
The goal of Knok Knok is to be a smart monitor for homes. It will be able to identify when the door is open/closed and send the data to the Internet. When intrusion happens, it will also be able to alarm the user as well as neighbors.

I live alone, but I start most mornings making a cup of tea. This daily ritual was passed on to some of my family members, so this can be used by them, as well. Often by the time I get to my tea, it is uncomfortably cold, having steeped while I worked through other parts of my morning routine. The device will show the temperature range of the tea. Red, too hot. Blue, too cold. Green is just right. Additionally, it will an SMS when the tea is ready.

In the past it was believed that watching tv from close could potentially damage your vision or cause health issues due to excessive radiation emissions. Even that has been proved wrong, it is still recommended to teach kids to keep some distance off screens to prevent them from developing eye strain and fatigue in adulthood, once the habit has been formed. Watch out! aims to help educate early TV watchers by indicating when the recommended distance has been reached.

My goal is to create an IoT product that senses the temperature of a room and has the ability to turn on a fan to keep the room at a consistent comfortable temperature.

Since I live alone and have a subwoofer I have a habit of turning my music up. I never know if my neighbors are bothered because they don’t complain. To be kind to them I am designing a warning system that can let me know when I am being too loud.
My wife and I like to travel but when we are away from home she worries about someone breaking into our apartment. I built a device that is placed near the front door and detects motion. When motion is detected an LED turns on and an alarm tone sounds to scare off the intruder. An SMS message is also sent to my cellphone informing me that someone has entered my home.

This hall effect sensor is triggered by a magnet in your key that turns on specific lights in your house before you even open the door. Now spot will no longer set off the motion sensor all day long, driving up your electric bill and you never come home to a dark empty house again.

I have many friends whose day starts off badly if they aren’t woken up gently. Loud and harsh alarms are not a good way for them to wake up. It is for them that I will make an alarm which wakes them up gently. This will wake up the sleeper slowly by exposing them to more and more light. It simulates the way that humans are conditioned to wake up as the sun rises, and by the time the sun/light is bright, the sleeper has been brought gently out of deep sleep and into a more wakeful state. The alarm will check for movement about 45 minutes prior to the set alarm time and if any movement is detected, it will start the lighting up process then. If no movement is detected, it will start to light up any way, half an hour prior to the set time. It them increases in brightness slowly (for about half an hour) in the time before your alarm is set to ring. At the time that the alarm is set for, the user will receive an SMS asking them to wake up.

Even that has been proven wrong, it is still recommended to teach kids to keep some distance of screens to prevent them from developing eye strain and fatigue in adulthood, once the habit has been formed. Watch out! aims to help educate early TV watchers by automatically turning your TV screen off when it senses someone standing at an unrecommended distance.

One of my roommates meditates for a cumulative time of 2-3 hours a day. Being the talkative person that I am, I would disturb her often; always unsure if she was in the zone. To give her some peace, I plan to insert a pressure sensor in/under her meditation mat which will send a signal online where I can check if she’s free or not. Another output could be a WIFI compatible light on her door which would light up whenever she's meditating.

The most inclusive and direct interpretation of “electrical fire” is a fire involving some type of electrical failure or malfunction. Any equipment powered by electricity can have such a failure. The Apartment Fire Monitor is an IoT device that the user can put it near the cluster of wires. When a fire is detected, it will alert user until the dangerous situation is over and the user reset it.

My roommate loves to snack. He literally opens the fridge 20 times a day and forgets to close the fridge door 20 times a day. 'Snack Preventer' is an IoT device that reminds you to close the fridge door via a visual cue (LED) and a sound. The device also sends you an alert message reminding you of the number of times you snacked today.

Evan lives right next to a bus stop that has 4 buses that get him around to different places. The convenience of location makes him too comfortable and never plan ahead and often left out missing a bus and have to wait another 10 or more minutes. Thus, he really needs a real-time bus tracker that plans his trips and gives him visual/sound cue about the real-time status of the bus so if the bus is a bit delayed/ahead of schedule so when he needs to go NOW, Evan will be able to know.

The intention of this IoT project is to help turn off lights within the home when not in use. My roommate tends to leave lights on when she heads to bed or leaves the apartment, so creating a system that understands when no one is in the room and can turn off the lights. It will work by sensing sound and once the particle recognizes that sound has been displayed in over 30 minutes, it will shut off the lights.

Do you have any trouble with the indoor air humidity? The product I build will help you to detect the humidity level and notify you when you need to refill the humidifier.
My little one took his first steps recently. He is on the move and into everything. Being first time parents my wife and I are still learning how to “baby-proof” our home. And although we change a lot of things, there are still certain areas, like where the TV plugs to the wall, that can be a little precarious. I plan to create a baby sensor to be placed in one of these troublesome spots that will notify my wife when she is just out of range to catch him herself.

Would you struggle to figure out what to wear in this rapid-change weather day? Do not want to waste your time to change your clothes only when you step outside your house? Now WhatToWear can help you sense the outside temperature and humidity and send a sign to you suggesting the weather ouside and what to wear.

How do you perfectly take good beer or milk from your fridge and make it awesome? Are you ever out shopping and forget if you are of your favorite drink or food? If so, this project is for you. This project creates a real-time monitor that detect if you are low on a specific food or drink. For example, beer, it uses a weight detector to detect if it is a full beer bottle or an empty one. It connects to the Internet and sends a message to inform users that it is time to buy a new beer. The weight detector is a force sensitive material and is put under the beer.

Not to disturb user's daily routine of setting the alarm on the phone, this device is not designed to be an alarm but enhance the function of alarms. It works by detecting the alarm sound in the morning and starting timing. If no motion of leaving the bed detected after a while, it will start its own alarm tone. Further down, it sends message to roommate for help.

Long distance relationships can be tough. Especially when its 7965 miles with a 10.5 hour time difference. This device makes an attempt to bridge this gap. It consists of a frame with every end user that lights up and signals the user at the other end indicating your presence in the space, when it detects motion. It is also connected to IFTTT- Location so that it can detect location change and update it on the frame via a pointing pin.
Some housemates have a habit of hitting the “snooze” button on their alarm too many times. In an effort to efficiently awaken these types of housemates, an IOT alarm will be created. Once programmed, this alarm will first rouse the sleepy housemate with an audio alarm which will be quickly followed by an irritating display of LED lights. The only way to turn off the alarm will be to turn the lights on in the room. The photon will sense whether or not the lights have been turned on using a light sensor. In theory, once the housemate has gotten out of bed and turned the lights on, they will be awake enough to not go back to sleep.

My proposal is a device that helps my roommate make the perfect bath without having to stand around watching it and testing the temperature. It will alert the user when the water needs to be turned off because it has reached a certain height and when it has cooled down enough to get in or needs more hot water based on the user’s preference. To do this, I will need a thermistor, water sensor, and buzzer in case the user’s phone is on silent.
The 'Are my kids home yet?' system will use two pressure sensors (one per child/bed) to assess if I child is at home and sleeping. The system will report out if each child is home by lighting up their LED to confirm they are at home in bed.
